"Older model that won't turn on" - Acorn refuses to help
Customer: “Hi, I have a very old acorn stairlift. That acorn told me they wouldn’t even teach me how to open or turn it on.”
Stairlift Medics: “Yeah, they’re wonderful that way. How old? Does it have a red plug to turn it off or a black switch?”
Customer: “I don’t even know where that is. I see a key.”
Stairlift Medics: “The same side as the key. There’s either a big red plug that you pull out to turn it off…”
Customer: “Yes, sir.”
Stairlift Medics: “Red plug? Yeah. Unfortunately, there’s not much anybody does with those anymore. What’s wrong with it?”
Customer: “I don’t even know how to turn it on to see. We’re assuming that it needs a battery because it’s been so long since it’s been run.”
Stairlift Medics: “Yea, we don’t work on those, because when you open those up, unfortunately, to change the batteries, you run such a huge risk of something else going haywire because it’s a cobweb of wires. It’s just if I were to take it apart and show you, you would say, what idiot designed this? I’m serious. I have worked on them years ago and I installed them 20 years ago. It’s literally just a huge cobweb of wires all interconnected. If you don’t take that cover off absolutely perfectly, you’re going to damage something.”
What Should You Do?
Unfortunately, Acorn’s design issues and refusal to service older models leaves customers stranded. While some errors and issues can be fixed by a repair team like Stairlift Medics, there are some issues that cannot safely be repaired without causing further damage.
In those cases, Stairlift Medics offers the best replacement options to ensure you have a reliable stairlift. If you’re stuck with an outdated Acorn stairlift, contact us today for a replacement solution that ensures future repairability and reliability.
"It's stuck!" - The battery was replaced this year, but it still won't work
Customer: “Hi. I was checking to see if you are a repair company that does Acorn Stairlifts?”
Stairlift Medics: “Is it a straight acorn or curved?”
Customer: “It’s straight.”
Stairlift Medics: “Okay. What’s going on with it?”
Customer: “Well, it was going up the steps and stopping, like, maybe every three feet. And as long as you pushed it back, it would go back up okay. But then it got stuck at the top of the step and it’s giving me a number five or number six code.”
Stairlift Medics: “How old is this stairlift?”
Customer: “It’s pretty old.”
Stairlift Medics: “The codes you’re telling me are old codes. So, when was the last time you had batteries put in it?”
Customer: “Within the last year. I think it might be something stuck in it because it won’t move even with turning the emergency knob like for when the power goes out.”
Stairlift Medics: “So the only other thing I could think of is that your motor is probably worn out. Unless the actual motor and the gearbox were messed up, that would do the same thing. It would be jammed.”
What Should You Do?
For this customer, Stairlift Medics was then able to schedule a service appointment to further inspect the stairlift and provide the necessary repairs. Depending on the error code and issue the Acorn stairlift is having, repairs may be possible.
If repair is an option, Stairlift Medics will promptly address these mechanical issues, ensuring your stairlift doesn’t leave you stranded. Is your stairlift stuck? Contact us for assistance.
Need Help Troubleshooting Acorn Error Codes?
Use these codes to quickly diagnose the exact cause of the fault or issue for the most common Acorn stairlift models we encounter.
"The alarm is going off" - And the error codes are changing
Customer: “Hi, I have an Acorn chair lift and it has an alarm going off, and I don’t know how to shut it off. It had yesterday H4, and now it just has H.”
Stairlift Medics: “Hey, is it a straight unit or a curved unit?”
Customer: “It’s a curved unit.”
Stairlift Medics: “Ah. An H4 is typically a multi area code and that’s typically board related. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to call Acorn. And most likely you need to have the circuit board replaced.”
Customer: “Okay, thank you. Is there a way I can shut that alarm off?”
Stairlift Medics: “Yeah. Do you have an on/off switch?”
Customer: “I’ve got the key and I’ve unplugged it from the wall.”
Stairlift Medics: “The key doesn’t do anything. There’s a black on/off switch. Depending on which model you have, it’s either right there next to the key or it’s around the side on the same panel between the panel and the wall.”
What Should You Do?
Even when the issue ultimately needs to be handled by Acorn directly, Stairlift Medics is happy to help as much as possible, like in this situation with the constant alarm sounding.
Some Acorn issues require manufacturer intervention, but for all other repairs and maintenance, Stairlift Medics can guide you through the process and offer alternative solutions. "Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't" - Facing intermittent issues with a straight Acorn stairlift
Customer: “I’m calling in reference to a stairlift that my mom has. It’s an Acorn stairlift and she needs someone to do some maintenance because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s not consistent.”
Stairlift Medics: “When it doesn’t work, does it throw any codes that she remembers seeing?”
Customer: “E3.”
Stairlift Medics: “Okay. How old is it? Is it a straight lift? 120 or 130?”
Customer: “What does that mean?”
Stairlift Medics: “I’m trying to figure out which model it is. Let me ask you if you remember, if it has a pink like a reddish color seat or a tannish color seat?”
Customer: “A tannish color seat.”
Stairlift Medics: “Okay. So an E3 is usually just a connection on the board. It could be just that the things on the board aren’t making a good connection. I’ve seen that happen.”
